AdviceHow to prepare to the photo-shoot?
How to prepare to the photo-shoot These tips apply to any photo-shoot you will attend in the future. Have a good rest the night before. At times the photo-shoot can take many hours, you need to have energy for the whole day. You also do not want to have puffy eyes nor keep yawning throughout the day. Avoid spicy dishes, as well as food which makes you feel bloated. The first one will cause unpleasantly smelling perspiration or even worse - uncontrollable gases. The second one might make sucking your belly in difficult. Both will make you feel embarrassed and they can be avoided. No alcohol the night before! It will make your skin dry, your breath foul, not to mention the unprofessional impression you can make on the studio team. Drink a lot of water to keep your skin hydrated. Various cosmetics applied on the day of the shoot might irritate and dehydrate your skin. Get rid of any body or facial hair if you do not want them to be visible on the pictures. Do not leave it until last minute as any redness or irritation of the skin will be noticeable and not all of it can be retouched. Be careful with tanning, as swimming suit/lingerie white marks are undesirable and difficult to hide. Very dark or orange coloured complexion is not a good idea either. Clean your make up very well the night before and wash your hair. Both skin and hair should be fresh and natural. Do not apply any makeup or hair products on the day of your shoot!!!You will have to wash it off anyway, professional makeup for photography purposes is completely different to daily makeup, and your hair will be difficult to manage. If you come with makeup and hairdo, you will only waste the time of studio team and appear an amateur. Be polite and pay attention to what is being said to you, the people you will be working with have many years experience in modelling industry, they know what they are doing. Smile! It always helps! To help you in the first steps of your career we have summarized some essential tips that will guide you trough the way.
Scam modelling agencies are agencies (or people who pretend to be agencies) that will ask you for money up front, supposedly for a contract, promise work and never deliver. Few of these agencies may be operated by people who just don't understand the business, but most of them set out deliberately to defraud their victims. Reputable agencies are very careful not to take on models who are unlikely to get work, but the scam agencies will take on literally everyone who applies. Model agencies are not allowed to charge you money just to go onto their books but some of them do it anyway . The way that honest agencies work is that they will only charge you a percentage of your earnings (usually around 20-25%).
There are different types of modelling suitable for different type of people. To be a model you might have to consider that the industry requires specific height, weight and dress size. Before applying to a modelling agency you have to be realistic about your features. Do you have the requirements for the type of modelling that you are interested in? If you don't, would you consider other type of modelling? Some basic guidelines: Fashion modelling: Girls minimum height 5'8 and dress size 8-10 Boys minimum 6'0 and suit size 38 to 42 (European) Commercial: Girls minimum height 5'7 Boys minimum 5'10 Plus size : Sizes 12 to 14 Height: minimum 5'7 Petite: Sizes 6-10
You don't have to be a photographer to spot the difference between makeover pictures and portfolio pictures. Make-over studios are great for obtaining photo frames and to display them as your personal photo album but they are not considered portfolio material by the agencies. If you have ever been to a makeover shoot you will remember that although you had someone to do your makeup and even your hair, you probably did not have any help in styling your clothes. The pictures were very similar from person to person and within one shoot, repeated poses and facial expressions, without any regard to your specific beauty and style of photography suitable for you. They were taken in such way to please you and make you purchase as many pictures as possible, no matter how alike they are. Professional portfolio should underline your individual type of beauty and match it with type of modelling suitable for you, such as smiley and natural shots for commercial modelling.
TFP or 'time for prints' means that you get prints for your time spent in front of camera. It is a good option for a beginner to practice posing and observe best features on a picture. In a TFP shoot no money changes hands. The model doesn't get any hourly or session fee, and the photographer doesn't get any hourly fee, a session fee, or any pay for providing the model with prints and/or digital images. The amount of images you get, the size, and when you will receive them, depends on the photographer, and this is something you need to discuss with the photographer individually. If you have almost zero camera time, it is great no matter what. You need images, and you need to relax. You need to learn how to behave in front of the camera. Notice that most of the photographers that offer this service are amateurs as well, they need you as much as you need them. But this does not mean that they are unprofessional. Many professionals will do a TFP shoot with an amateur model, who can't pay their usual rates, but whose look or previous work the professional finds intriguing. Now, if you are willing to pay each team member, you would have much more control over the shoot, and you would have a team much more motivated to care for what they create for you. |
